How To Use Active Scotland

Active Scotland is here to help you find places to go to be active near you—sports centres, community halls, parks, gyms, climbing walls, woodlands, swimming beaches, national cycle routes, and lots more. Tell us where you are, and we’ll point you to some places nearby.

Getting Started

All you need to do to get started is to put a place into the big search box at the top of the page. You can use a postcode, the town name, or a full address, and we’ll show you a list of all the places we know about in Scotland near you where you can go and take part in physical activity, from aerobics to volleyball.

The list is in order of distance, from closest to furthest, and to start with, will include everything.

Finding out more

Click through on the name of a place that looks promising, and we’ll tell you what we know about it: which activities take place there, and how to contact people who can tell you more about it.

Narrowing things down a bit

We’ve organised things to help you do a quick sort based on activities which are good for an easy or gentle start, for sportier activities, for indoors and outdoors, and things which are better going alone or joining up with friends and family. Which are you interested in? Pick one from the drop down in the search.

Looking for something specific?

Want to find a place to learn to swim, go tango dancing, or take up tai chi? That’s where "anything else" comes in. Make sure you have a place to start with, and then put what you’re looking for in that box, and we’ll show you the nearest matches we know about.

Want to see more on a page?

Look at the bottom right, and you can choose 5, 10, or 20 results on each page for either the list of the map.

Seeing things on the map

You can click through to the map view or the list view from the tabs under the search. Clicking on an icon on the map will pop up some information about the place, and lead you to more detail if you click on the name in the pop up. You can zoom in and out of the map for a closer or further view using the slider on the left. To move around the map, use the arrows, or click on the map and pull the map in the direction you want to go while holding down the mouse button. (This might not work if you are using an older browser, but the arrows will.)

What are Active People?

Active People are the groups, clubs, teams and schemes that we know about—people to get in touch with and join for different physical activities and sports. You can explore the list in almost the same way as the places, except we’ve listed them by local authority area rather than putting them on the map.
